Most people are likely aware of the history of Red Ribbon Week that began in response to the death of DEA agent Enrique Camarena who was assassinated by drug dealers in Mexico. A small group of concerned citizens began wearing red ribbons in memory of Camarena and to encourage citizens to take a stand. The symbolism caught on with increasing numbers of people making a visible commitment to the goal of a healthy and drug-free community.
