A handmade hardwood Bookbinding press that can do the work of three presses in one: Backing, Finishing, and final Nipping. I make these by hand (and use them myself for bookbinding). The wood used is solid poplar which is sufficiently rigid and hard (hard enough for backing). The spindles may be carved from oak or poplar, and the handles of the spindles may be oak or pine, depending on what is available. It is finished with a light rub of boiled linseed oil. The boards are 7.25" x 21" The space between the spindles (to accommodate a book) is 16.5" which handily accommodates most all normal-size book projects (most books are smaller than 7"x10") The boards are a beefy 1 1/2" thick (two .75" boards glued together for warp-prevention) The spindles are 1 1/4" thick and threaded at 6 tpi. The handles are 1 1/4" thick. The spindles are not "locked" in the first board, but are free-floating. Press clamps very tight and very snug.
