An acorn is the seed-containing fruit of an oak tree. Each acorn contains one seed with a meaty outer shell the seed will use for food as it matures. Not all acorns make it to maturity, however, as many serve as food for wildlife such as deer, squirrels and birds. Humans, too, can eat acorns.
