Description

Warmbloods are a group of middle-weight horse types and breeds primarily originating in Europe. The term distinguishes these horses from both heavy draft horses (cold bloods) and refined light saddle horses such as the Thoroughbred, Arabian, and Akhal-Teke (hot bloods). Warmbloods have become popular since the end of World War II when mechanization made agricultural horses obsolete, and recreational riding became more widespread in the western world.

As with any ancient race, the origin of the Percheron breed is shrouded in myth, for the foundations of the breed precede extensive documentation, and certainly pedigrees, by several centuries. Usually gray or black in color, Percherons are well muscled, and known for their intelligence and willingness to work. This French draft horse was imported into the United States in the 1800s. Americans discovered the usefulness of this draft horse.

The Thoroughbred is known for having agility, grace, speed, stamina, and courage, making them ideally suited for any number of disciplines beyond the racetrack. As a result, many retired racehorses have successfully transitioned into second careers. Thoroughbreds compete at the highest levels of international competition in eventing, show jumping, and dressage, and also make outstanding hunters, steeplechasers, barrel racers, and polo mounts.
