220215-N-MI811-1001 An infographic for the Centennial of the United States Navy Aircraft Carriers of each carrier named “Enterprise” throughout history. On May 12, 1938, Yorktown-class aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV 6) was commissioned as the United States Navy’s sixth carrier and seventh U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Each class of aircraft carriers after CV 6 have adopted the name to carry on its legacy as U.S. carriers continue to advance, from Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), the first nuclear-powered carrier, to the forthcoming Ford-class aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 80). In the nearly 100 years since the first aircraft carrier was commissioned, from CV 1 to CVN 78, aircraft carriers have been the Navy’s preeminent power projection platform and have served the nation’s interest in times of war and peace.
