Being an impatient child, this was a dream because who can wait one more day to tear into that shiny pile of presents? Of course, it didn’t hurt that there was still Santa, so really, we got to open presents two days in a row! Once my sister and I were old enough to learn that Santa was a myth, I immediately started to boycott the idea of opening presents on Christmas Eve. I was still impatient to open gifts, but without the joy of gift giving (and opening) happening on Christmas morning, Christmas day just wasn’t as exciting. It felt like just any other holiday where people come over to eat a fancy meal. It just felt a lot like another Thanksgiving. Great, that we got to see family and eat good food, but boring. So when I grew up and started my own little family, I steadfastly refused to open gifts on Christmas Eve. But remembering how hard it is to wait just one more day and wanting to build the excitement for Christmas Day just a little bit more, we began the tradition of The Christmas Eve Box. The Christmas Eve Box is a box of practical goodies for your child to open on Christmas Eve. The options for what little gifts to include are endless, but I usually like to keep it simple since they’ll be getting plenty of goodies the next morning. Our Christmas Eve Boxes include a pair of Christmas pajamas (I like to get the girls matching ones), a package of hot cocoa, a small edible treat, and a Christmas book that I read them that night before bed. Other fun treat ideas are: Slippers Socks Christmas Movie Coloring Book Christmas Craft Ornament Letter from Santa Small Toy/Plush The Christmas Eve Box is such a fun and simple treat that the girls look forward to and it makes the waiting for Christmas Day just a bit more bearable.
