Four years ago, Maya and Sat Singh swapped their corporate jobs in Mumbai for a chance to convert their family's art deco estate into a boutique hotel. The lush 30 acre lakeside retreat, Shahpura Bagh, is now one of off-the-beaten-track Rajasthan's greatest finds. Ten spacious rooms - each with four poster beds, Persian and Kashmiri carpets, claw foot bath tubs and chaise lounges - stretch over the two original houses. One is also lived in by the current guardians who host communal dinner and drinks each evening beside the pool or in the ornately-furnished dining room shared with black and white family portraits and a stuffed tiger. While Shahpura Bagh's facade is stark white, its heart is green: the Singh's organically grow most of their vegetables, use solar heating and divert a portion of room rates to community projects and local schools, amongst other things. While there, participate in these community projects, go shopping for colorful mujari - leather sandals - in the village of Shahpura or climb the crumbling Dhikhola Fort, the family's former home, now dilapidated citadel with views soaring across the chapatti-flat plains around.
