Description

Good for reduction of smaller raw blocks of rough material, knocking corners off of small raw nodules to create platforms, and cleaning rough material to better prepare spalls for standard billet percussion. Not for delicate fine reduction. Sold Individually. Steel hammer heads are constructed of carbon steel, and are not considered soft treated steel. Approximate weight of the hammer is of the steel head and handle combined. Handle is constructed of a fiberglass core with ergonomic rubber grips. We are now offering a line of spalling and cleaning hammers for those with local raw knapping stone resources. On large blocks, we first use our standard steel spalling hammers to strike large flakes and spalls. We then often employ the use of this 'stubby' hammer to clean defects and cortex from the raw material. These small hammers are also good for knocking awkward edges off of small nodules to create platforms for standard billet reduction. For spalling brittle material such as obsidian or glass please check out our brass spalling hammer.
