We started a tradition of growing our own Easter basket grass from wheat berries about 4 years ago. We learned about it at the Waldorf mommy and me class Hudson and I attended. It’s a great eco-friendly alternative to the traditional plastic grass . Real Easter grass (AKA wheat grass) is super easy to grow. The best part? When you are done with Easter, the wheat grass is edible! Supplies: A basket or other container Aluminum foil or plastic wrap Wheat berries Look for wheat berries in the bulk foods section of your local grocery or natural foods store. Can’t find them locally? Order from Potting soil (optional) Mason jar or bowl Water Spray bottle Approx 5-7 days of growing time Directions: Step 1- Soak the wheat berries in a mason jar or glass bowl over night. Make sure the water covers them completely as they will soak it all up. Cover with a jar/bowl with a kitchen towel. Step 2- Drain the wheat berries the next day. Some of them will have started to sprout. Step 3- Line basket/container with foil paper or plastic wrap and fill with potting soil. Step 4- Sprinkle soaked wheat berries, in a single layer, over potting soil (if using) or at the bottom of basket. Cover them with a wet paper towel (first 48 hours) and spray twice a day. Don’t let them dry out or they won’t grow. Also try to place near a sunny window for optimal growth. Step 5- Enjoy your eco-friendly Easter basket.
