Aegagropila Linnaei, more simply known as Marimo Moss Ball or Cladophora Aegagropila, is not actually a moss or plant: Marimo balls are actually a form of algae! This type of algae is found in shallow bodies of water where the current from the water movement then shapes the algae into the easily recognized spherical shape that earns its name. Native to Japan and Northern Europe, Marimo is a direct translation to seaweed ball in Japanese and is arguably the only algae that is readily welcomed in the aquarist's planted tank.
