Description

Our Blackened Steel Shirt is made from intimidating butted armor which has been blackened for moisture resistance. Reminiscent of the Black Prince, who purposefully let his mail darken to a blackish hue, this shirt features 16 gauge links combined in the "international" pattern. Common to all European mail, the international pattern utilizes 4 links through a 5th. Faithfully copied from examples in museums and private collections, the diameter of each outer link is about 7/16 of an inch and the inner link diameter is about 3/8 of a inch. Mail shirts fit up to a 54 inch chest, 33 inches long shirt, sleeves are approximately 18 inches and hang to just below the elbows on average height warriors. We recommend keeping this mail oiled at all times. Weight is about 23 pounds.

This chainmail hauberk is crafted from dome riveted flat rings which alternate with solid flat rings. The individual rings of mild steel measure 9 mm in diameter and 17 gauge in thickness. This method of alternating riveted mail with solid rings punched from sheets of steel was a historical method used in much mail construction. It saved a great deal of time by circumventing the need to rivet half the rings.
